One Spectacular Night

You can probably guess from my previous posts that I love going to concerts. It’s the one thing I’ve missed most during our two week that turned into however many months quarantine that still has no end in sight. Some bands at the very beginning played virtual shows to keep morale up, but that soon died out.

I was really excited when AJR announced they would do a one night only show online on December 26th. I’ve really gotten into AJR since I wrote my second book in November 2019. In fact, their song “Weak” is one of the songs that inspired a good portion. This song may sound familiar if you watched the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade this year. They’ll also perform at the We the People Inauguration Concert in January 17th. This is how they wrote “Bang!” from One Spectacular Night:

This show was stunning. Not having a physical audience allowed them to do things they couldn’t normally do, including sitting on a park bench to sing “Wow I’m Not Crazy.” They implemented wirework into the show, which was really amazing during “Burn the House Down” when Jack appeared to walk on a road made of light projected over the stage. It was amazing to see Ryan play piano upside down in the air, the video screen showing a background of stars to give the feel he was floating in space during “Turning Out Pt. 2.”

Overall, this show was exactly what I needed after a year of no shows. I felt better than I had in a very long time, and the ending was particularly beautiful, ending it with “100 Bad Days,” which is a song about how our bad experiences in life can shape us into better people. Here’s a recap of the show, including everything I’ve mentioned in this post. It includes Jack’s short speech during “Burn the House Down,” and it’s particularly inspiring to me.

Here’s to jumping off more (metaphorical) ledges and seeing where we land in 2021!
