Method of the Madness

Welcome to November! Hopefully where you are isn’t too cold. I’ve been inhaling my pumpkin candle since midnight on September 1, so I’m probably needing to get a new one by now. I get a bit reminiscent towards the end of the year, and now is no exception.

It’s been almost a year for this blog! I’ve had a hard time believing that. I started this blog because I was told an author needs an “online presence” nowadays before you’ll get published. I’m not too sure how true that is, but what have I lost? Absolutely nothing.

One thing I’ll say about writing, is that I’m pretty grateful for the advances in technology we’ve had. There is something to be said for handwriting things. I’ll do it if I get what I think is a brilliant idea, and I don’t want to lose it. The problem with handwriting things, for me at least, is that I have trouble actually doing it. My brain is wired a certain way, so my mind is about 10 thoughts ahead of what my hands can get down. As a result, it’s easier for me to type to keep up with my brain. And what if I spilled water on my paper? The ink would run, and I’d lose what I wrote. Believe me, it’s happened more times than I like.

I’m also glad for computers. They do come with their own set of distractions (internet, I’m looking at you, and yes I understand irony), but it’s much easier and more convenient to carry around my 5 lb. laptop or get on Google Docs on another computer to work than haul a typewriter around. I barely know how to use a typewriter, too. I use one for work every now and then, but overall, I’d prefer not to. I have trouble changing the margins, so I’ll just stick the paper in a bit further over if I can. Besides, if you had a classic typewriter, there’s no delete button. If you make a mistake, you have to start over on that page.

I understand computers aren’t perfect, but they’re what works for me. Now that we’re in another session of NaNoWriMo, I’m more appreciative of them than ever, since I can keep everything in one place. All my documents, my spreadsheets for word counts, any research, even my writing music. Wish me luck this month–it’s going to be an adventure!

  1. SO many reasons NOT to want to go back to typewriters! Remember that idiot in You’ve Got Mail who had multiple typewriters? Idiot!
