It’s a Gift

Lately I’ve been on an emo music kick. I was one of the biggest emo kids in high school, even though I didn’t want to admit it. I embrace it now, because it’s just silly to not admit who and what you are. One of my favorite songs is “Move Along” by All American Rejects, and while this song is about moving forward when things are bad, it’s a good reminder to not dwell in the past.

I have that problem. Every day, I’m reminded constantly of things I did wrong in the past and relive them in my head, sometimes even for hours. It really sucks. Then I start thinking about how it’s going to impact my future.

I know I’m not the only person with this problem. We live in a constantly connected world, full of instagram lattes, here’s how to build your retirement savings more effectively, Throwback Thursdays and Flashback Fridays. I’m guilty of it myself. I was on Facebook a lot on my honeymoon, mostly uploading pictures of our wonderful time. But was I really having a wonderful time, or was I so focused on the world knowing we were having a wonderful time?

We’re going to a concert Monday once I’m off work. This is the only time this band is going to do a North America tour. I have no doubt in my mind people are going to be filming with their phones, holding them up. I’m going to try my hardest to keep my phone in my pocket, but I may take a couple pictures.

Why? Because I want to work on learning how to live more in the present.

I’m terrible about it. It’s important to reflect on the past so we don’t make the same mistakes. It’s important to be considerate of the future so we don’t end up having to make difficult decisions later in life that could’ve been prevented with a little work at the present. But I’m tired of constantly being worried about things I can’t change because they already happened, and I’m tired of being afraid of things I can’t change because they haven’t happened yet.

Master Oogway said it best in the movie Kung Fu Panda.
