Welcome to the August update! I’m kind of disappointed with this month’s numbers, but in the grand scheme of things, I’m doing pretty well. I read four books this month, getting me to 30/45 books, which is a lot considering we’re in busy season and I had Camp NaNoWriMo in July, so I didn’t have that much time to read in the midst of all that writing. As always, I receive no compensation for reviewing these books or you purchasing them. I’ve included links to purchase the books on Amazon, but feel free to support your local library or bookstore!
The Monarch of the Glen by Compton MacKenzie

This was such a fun book! My husband got it for me as a gift one year because I love the TV show that’s (very loosely) based off this book. This book is the first of three that make up The Highland Omnibus, which is a set of farcical novels set in Scotland. This particular one is about a Scottish laird (a noble, similar to an earl) who basically goes to war with a group of hikers who completely disregard his signs on his land that say “no camping.” Between locking the hikers in the old castle dungeons, stalking stags, and dealing with Scottish Nationalists, the laird of Glenbogle has his hands full!

Amethyst Witch: A Stacy Justice Mystery by Barbra Annino

This book was really fun, and I’ve found I have a very soft spot in my heart for cozy mysteries. At the time of this post, it’s currently only in ebook format and FREE on Amazon! I’m not sure if it’ll be at your library or elsewhere. Anyway, this is a prequel novel, telling us the story of how Stacy ended up in the town of Amethyst. Stacy comes from a long line of witches, but she’s trying to put that life behind her in Chicago. When her grandfather suddenly falls ill from poisoning, she returns to the town of Amethyst and has to prove her grandmother isn’t the culprit. This was a great read!

The Path of Daggers: Wheel of Time #8 by Robert Jordan

I’ll let you in on a little secret: I’ve been listening to the audiobooks. It’s NOT cheating–audiobooks definitely count on this, as do rereads (which I just found out recently). This book was different from others. It seemed like there were more battles than other books, and the political intrigue between the Aes Sedai and rebels has only deepened. I’m really enjoying this series still, and I don’t want to reach into the story and shake the characters as much. They still won’t listen to each other, which is infuriating, but it’s either not as bad as previous books or I’ve just gotten used to it.

Love Muffin and Chai Latte: The Monsoon #1 by Anya Wylde

FLUFF ALERT! This is definitely a very fluffy book, but it’s fun. Sometimes you need a little fluff, and this was a good option. I had a lot of issues with the character Chris from the get go, so it’s good he turns out to not be a good guy later in the book. He was very controlling and condescending towards Tabby. In the very beginning he tells her she looks like a theater club reject, when she’s wearing items of clothing that were from her family, which make her feel better in moments when she feels uncomfortable or scared. Tabby ends up growing up and realizing some things about herself, and I was almost happy with how it ended. I would’ve loved for Tabby to realize she can be happy by herself and doesn’t need a man, but it still had a good ending.

Read The Lost Girls of Paris. It’s my book club read this month. See if you like it better than I did. It just made me get the nonfiction book that this book was very loosely based on. Hope the nonfiction read is better!
