Beat the Clock!

You know what I haven’t done in a while? Free writing. I did it once before, where I set the timer for five minutes, and I just wrote whatever popped in my head. When I did it, I actually had a bit of a more productive work day. Let’s see if it works again!

Ok, five minutes, starting…NOW!

My stomach is really full. I probably ate too much at dinner. We had chicken, a vegetable medley, and instant mashed potatoes. Yeah, that diet thing has died already. We at least eat healthy at lunch, since I made chicken in a crock pot. Whatever. We don’t get out of this alive anyway, might as well enjoy myself.

We got Will a new desk and a new desk chair for me. We went to Staples, and I was super embarassed when they had to unlock the doors for us. I didn’t know the store was already closed. Granted, they were closed for about two minutes, but I felt really awful. When I worked retail, I loathed those people and swore I wouldn’t be one of them. Here I am, one of those people. To be fair, I thought they closed at 9.

Damn it, the cat has thrown up. I’m sorry, you probably didn’t need to know that, but he eats too fast and it makes him sick. Now he looks all innocent and we can’t trust him around our drinks.

MAN I love Loreena McKennitt. I have her playing right now as I do this. Really, one of the best live performances I’ve ever been to. I was so happy I got to take my mom, even though I was supposed to take Will. Mom was really surprised when she heard Loreena!

And time! Maybe next time I’ll do 10 minutes instead of 5. Oh what the hell, why not? Another 5 minutes…NOW!

Anyway, so she was really surprised when she heard Loreena sing. I usually listen to metal, so I think she was actually really relieved when she heard Loreena begin to sing. The first song she sang was “Samain Night.” Did you know it’s pronounced “SOW-en?” The Celts, man. They’ll drive you crazy with their language.

Loreena told a really funny story at the show. She said when she was in Ireland performing one time, she met a guy in the airport who sold her a skull, claiming it was the skull of Brian Boru. She knew he was full of it, but she said it would make a fun conversation starter back in Canada. She came back to Ireland a few years later, and she ran into the guy again, selling a skull, much smaller than the last, saying it was Brian Boru’s skull. She called him out on it, and he said “ah yes, well, it’s Brian when he was a lad!”

Of course, the entire auditorium was roaring in laughter, myself included. I silently sang along to all the songs. It was almost a spiritual experience for me, getting to see my favorite singer. She’s phenomenal, and whenever I’m having a really horrible depression spell, or really tired, or writing, or reading on a rainy day, she’s my go-to.

There’s five minutes. I guess that’ll have to do for today.

  1. You can read and listen to music at the same time? I can’t multi-task like that, especially if it’s music I love.

    1. Some of it is purely instrumental, and others I’ve listened to so often I hear it but can still focus on my book.
