Life Update

It was quite a crazy week last week, up through yesterday (Monday)! My sister got married in Washington D.C., and we flew back to Dallas yesterday. I slept for almost three hours when I got home, so I’ve lost track of what day it was. Imagine my panic when I was writing the start of this post in my head in the car as my husband and I were driving home from the grocery store and realizing that it was, in fact, Tuesday, and not Monday.

“WILL! OH GOD, IT’S TUESDAY! I’M LATE ON MY BLOG POST!”

So here we are. It isn’t getting published early in the morning as it usually is, but I figure as long as it comes out today, we’re good to go. Also, I’m still on vacation, so I have an excuse. I hope this day confusion doesn’t continue and I forget to go to work on Monday and instead show up to church for Mass at 11:15.

Anyway, last week wasn’t crazy only because of the wedding, though it was pretty busy and fun. I also had the end of Camp Nano on Tuesday. I didn’t get nearly as much written in April as I wanted, but I did get some written. I’ll do the second session of Camp Nano in July, but I’ll hopefully have plenty more written before then. I think for the first draft of my manuscript, I want to have 90-95k words, just to give me plenty of wiggle room in case I need to cut a lot out. After all, as Ernest Hemingway said, “The first draft of anything is shit.” Hey, he said it, not me.

This week I’ll work on writing, but I’m also going to try and read more. After all, I have the time. Why not? Saturday will be my monthly update on my book goal, and as a reminder, you can always be my friend on Goodreads! I’d love to see what you’re reading.

Another thing going on is something called Racery. I’m a member of a Doctor Who-themed virtual running club, which is really fun. They have about 5 events a year, and each event benefits a different charitable organization. For example, the most recent event was Dalek-themed (if you don’t know what a Dalek is, it’s this alien creature that lives inside a robot and only has one emotion, which is hatred), so the charity partner was BEST Robotics. From the event website,

BEST Robotics is a national nonprofit that provides STEM Education for workforce development through a FREE after-school program and competition for students in middle and high school. The proceeds from the Skaro Sprint will help fund young robotics engineers, and lead them to a local competition where mentors and volunteers help lead them to an incredible future!

In the past we’ve built wells for fresh water sources in the Navajo Nation, where there are a surprising number of people who don’t have access to clean water; Galgos (a Spanish dog often used in dog racing) rescue groups; and we helped a child with Downs Syndrome get adopted through RODS.

Now, Racery isn’t a charitable event, but we’ve had fun with it! My team, the Jammie Dodgers, is currently winning. We’ll complete the first 1225 miles today! The second half of Racery (since this is a 15 day event), we’ll have to complete another 1225 miles again! It’s been really fun, and easy. I have an Amazon Fire tablet, so I can watch something while on the treadmill and not get bored. Our minimum is 0.5 miles, and our maximum daily allowance is 15 miles, unless we’re running a marathon, which I definitely am not doing.

Speaking of, it’s probably time I hit the treadmill. We can’t lose now!
